The fishmonger has fallen in love with the milliner, whose cart is across the street from his. But how is he to give his bride the elegant home she deserves? He has a brilliant plan: he will make their wedding so fine that surely their friends will shower them with the best of everything. His plan backfires, of course, but, like all good love stories, this is a tale that ends in a happy – if surprising – fashion.
Cary Fagan’s evocation of turn-of-the-century Kensington Market is perfectly brought to life by Regolo Ricci’s lively, affectionate paintings.
Cary Fagan is the author of several books for adults. He also co-edited Streets of Attitude: Toronto Stories, which won the City of Toronto Book Award. He is the author of Daughter of the Great Zandini and Gogol’s Coat (Tundra). Cary Fagan lives in Toronto with his wife and two daughters.
Award-winning illustrator Regolo Ricci was born in southern Italy and moved to Canada at the age of two. He studied classics and English literature at the University of Toronto. A self-taught artist, he has illustrated several picture books, including Cary Fagan’s Gogol’s Coat and Jan Mark’s Mr. Dickens Hits Town.
