In the Works:

A Tundra favorite, now an animated TV series! Coming this September to YTV, Jacob Two-Two the Animated Series, based on Mordecai Richler's classic story Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang.

A Governor General's Literary Award nominee by award-winning author Julie Johnston, In Spite of Killer Bees tells the story of the three Quade sisters' return to Port Desire, Ontario, to reclaim an inheritance. Against all odds, they find that family, trust, and acceptance are joyful and tear-filled reminders of the true meaning of kinship. Film rights have been sold for this brilliant, critically-acclaimed novel. Click here for details. The Washington Post says it best: "Forget killer bees. What this . . . novel has is a killer plot."

Tom Longboat was a hero. Despite poverty, poor training, and prejudice, he went on to become one of the world's best runners, winning the Boston Marathon in 1907 and running in the 1908 Olympic Marathon. This riveting sports story captures an intriguing episode of Canadian history in the early decades of the 20th century. Film rights for Jack Batten's Norma Fleck award-winning book The Man Who Ran Faster Than Everyone: The Story of Tom Longboat have been sold.

"[T]his book is a superb narrative - and a revelatory one - about a largely unknown if not quite unsung Canadian icon." The Globe and Mail

Now on Film:

Roch Carrier narrates his beloved, classic story, The Hockey Sweater, in the National Film Board of Canada's animated film, "The Sweater," (1980) directed by Sheldon Cohen. This evocative film won 15 international awards, including the British Academy of Film and Television Award for Best Animation.

Here are some favorites from celebrated children's author Dayal Kaur Khalsa - in print and on film:

In The Snow Cat, Elsie desperately wishes for a cat to keep her company, and one day a snow cat suddenly appears. The film version of this magical story, "The Snow Cat" (1998), directed and co-produced by Sheldon Cohen, is a co-production between the NFB and Snow Cat Productions Inc. It made its television debut on Teletoon.

I Want A Dog is an ingenious, offbeat story about a child's dreams of having a dog, and the wacky ways she shows her parents that she is responsible enough to care for it. It is a current production of the NFB, directed by Sheldon Cohen.

Visit the National Film Board of Canada for more information on these animated films.
